Italy is in the grip of a crisis as the country’s thirty-fourth victim dies. But there’s a greater danger facing us all.

이탈리아는 나라의 75%가 사망하는 대공황의 손아귀에 있다.

Iam sitting here in our apartment in Florence, Tuscany feeling both scared and defiant. The normally bustling street is quiet. It has been an extraordinary week which has profoundly shocked Italy.

나는 지금 무서움과 반항심을 동시에 느끼며 토스카나 주의 플로렌스에 있는 내 아파트에 앉아있다.  평소에 북적이던 거리는 조용하다. 이탈리아를 완전히 충격에 빠트린 기이한 일주일이었다.

Over the past few days the mood has shifted many times. The government and health officials are now adopting a calming and reassuring stance, realising that panic and misinformation can have catastrophic effects on the national psyche.

지난 며칠간 분위기는 수차례 바뀌었다. 정부와 보건 관계자들은 패닉과 잘못된 정보가 국가에 치면적인 영향을 미칠수 있다는 것을 깨닫고현재 차분하고 안심시키는 입장을 표명하고 있다.

Fear of an epidemic is as old as mankind itself

전염병에 대한 공포는 인류 그 자체만큼 오래되었다.

(mankind - all humans considered as a group)

The country’s president, Sergio Mattarella, has called for the “irrational and motiveless fear” seen this week to stop.

대통령, 세르조 마타렐라는 이번주에 본 "비성적이고 이유없는 두려움"을 멈춰달라고 요구했다.

(irrational - not based on clear thought or reason)

The Italian Society of Psychiatrists (SIP) has issued guidelines on how to cope with “Coronavirus stress and anxiety.”

SIP는 "코로나바이러스에  대한 스트레스와 불안"을 다루는 방법에 대해 가이드라인을 발행했다.

(cope - (of a person) deal effectively with something difficult.)

Enrico Zanalda, President of the society has talked about the “violent impact” the situation has had on daily life. It has caused “the cancellation or postponement of thousands of small but important events in people’s lives from birthdays to baptisms.”

SIP 회장 엔리코 자날다는 이 상황이 일상생활에 미친 "폭력적인 영향"에 대해 이야기 했다. 이것은 "생일부터 세례까지 사람들의 수천개의 작지만 중요한 행사가 연기되거나 취소"를 야기했다.

“Fear of an epidemic is as old as mankind itself. In this case its effect is amplified by incomplete, even false information which has caused public confidence in our institutions to collapse.”

"전염병에 대한 공포는 인류 그 자체만큼 오래되었다. 이 경우 이 공포의 영향은 불완전에 의해 증폭되며, 심지어 거짓 정보로 우리 기관에 대한 대중의 신뢰가 무너질 수 있다."

The “China” of Europe

Italy was the first European country to announce the death of a national from Coronavirus. It’s still the most affected country after China, Iran, Korea and Japan.

이탈리아는 코로나 바이러스 사망자를 처음으로 발표한 나라였다. 이탈리아는 여전히 중국, 이란, 한국 그리고 일본에 이어 가장 영향을 많이 받는 나라다. 

Eleven towns in the north were put on immediate lockdown. Fifty thousand citizens are still under curfew. Venice Carnival was cancelled. Many catwalk shows for Milan Fashion Week were held behind closed doors. Schools in the north are closed until at least 8 March. Public gatherings, including church services, banned.

북쪽에 있는 11개의 마을은 즉시 고립됐다. 5만명의 시민은 여전히 통행금지다. 베니스 카니발은 취소됐다. 밀라노 패션 위크에 열리기로 예정돼 있던 수 많은 패션 쇼도 취소됐다. 북쪽의 학교들은 최소 3월 8일까지 휴학했다. 교회를 포함한 모임들은 금지됐다.

The impact on travel to other countries was immediate. Mauritius blocked a passenger jet from Italy from disembarking unless passengers underwent a two-week quarantine.

다른 나라로의 여행에 대한 영향은 즉각적이었다. 모리셔스는 2주 동안 격리되지 않은 승객들을 이탈리아 발 여객기에서 내리지 못하게 했다.

An Italian cruise ship with an unwell crew member wasn’t allowed to dock in the Caribbean, even though, apparently, there was no Coronavirus on board.

이탈리아 크루즈 선에 감염자 탑승하지 않았음에도 불구하고 선원들의 몸이 좋지 않다면 카리브 제도에 정박하지 못하게 했다고 한다.

(dock -  a place in a port where ships are loaded, unloaded, or repaired)

The UK recommended people self-isolate if they have been in northern Italy.

영국은 북이탈리아에 있었던 사람들에게 자가격리를 권고했다.

American Airlines has suspended flights to Milan until 24 April.

아메리칸 에어라인은 밀라노 발 비행을 4월 24일까지 중단했다.
